Jean Shepherd was born and raised in "the region" and wrote about his home town of Hammond, Indiana quite frequent.

You might remember his most famous stories in the Movie A Christmas Story.

This is where it all started this is THE house where the leg lamp was first brought home and displayed, the actual porch he played on, and the town he grew up in and documented so well, they hate him for it.

Come on Hammond - wake up... when you enter Hammond, it should not only say your "Welcome to Hammond" needs the addition of " The real life town from the film A Christmas Story" or "home of Jean Shepherd and A Christmas Story" something like that. Really - why not take advantage of the fact that one of the biggest films ever is essentially about your town??

One more suggestion - buy the real house and turn it in to the museum Mr. Shepherd deserves and your town needs.

Hundreds of different events went on all over the city for sixteen days - Lectures, films, art exhibits, theater and more!



This year's theme was "Climate For Concern" so a great deal of the festivities centered around Global warming, disease, sustainability, and the arts. We attended a lecture, heard the Arctic Symphony playing in Millennium Park, and saw the crocheted Coral Reef on the second floor of the Cultural Center.

In the future, I will do my best to enjoy all 16 days of this annual event!
